A protected river estuary reserve of lush riverine forest, sand dunes, water lilies and rich birdlife. Boat trips along the Ropotamo River offer a tranquil escape into some of the coast's most pristine nature.

- Ropotamo River Boat Trip — Take the classic guided boat ride from the pier near the road bridge, drifting past reed beds, riverine forest and floating water lilies toward the sea.
- See the Water Lilies — In summer the river's backwaters bloom with white water lilies, one of the reserve's signature natural sights best viewed from the boat.
- Climb to Lion's Head Rock — Hike the short trail to the striking rock formation resembling a lion's head that overlooks the river mouth and coastline.
- Birdwatching in the Estuary — Watch for cormorants, herons, kingfishers and birds of prey in one of Bulgaria's richest wetland habitats along the Via Pontica migratory route.
- Walk the Sand Dunes and Beach — Explore the protected dunes where the Ropotamo meets the Black Sea, near the wild Arkutino beach and marsh.
- Visit Arkutino Marsh — Stroll the boardwalks and paths around this reed-fringed freshwater marsh just north of the river, a key part of the reserve.
- Explore Riverine Forest Trails — Follow shaded footpaths through lush longoz (flooded) forest of oak, ash and elm draped with lianas.

Local customs & good to know
- Respect the Reserve Rules — Ropotamo is a strictly protected area, so stay on marked paths and boats, and do not pick plants, disturb wildlife or leave litter.
- Boats Run Seasonally — River cruises operate mainly from spring through autumn and depend on weather and water levels, so check availability in the low season.
- Bring Cash and Sun Protection — Small kiosks and boat tickets may require cash, and the open river and dunes offer little shade, so carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Nodding Means Yes, Sort Of — Bulgarians traditionally shake their head for yes and nod for no, which can confuse visitors when asking directions or questions.
