History
Kakheti in eastern Georgia has been inhabited since ancient times and became a distinct political entity in the early medieval period, at times an independent principality and kingdom. It flourished under the unified Georgian monarchy and later, after the kingdom fragmented, endured repeated invasions by Persian and Ottoman forces, including devastating campaigns by Shah Abbas in the early 17th century. The independent Kingdom of Kakheti was eventually absorbed into the Kartli-Kakheti kingdom and then annexed by the Russian Empire in 1801. Today it remains one of Georgia's key historical and agricultural regions.

Kakheti is celebrated as the heartland of Georgian winemaking, where grapes have been cultivated for thousands of years and wine is still made in traditional clay vessels called qvevri buried underground. The region is known for its warm hospitality, lavish feasts led by a toastmaster known as the tamada, and landmarks such as the walled town of Sighnaghi and the Alaverdi and Bodbe monasteries.
