A powerful waterfall reached by a short scenic hike from the Dariali area near Kazbegi. Its accessible trail and forceful cascade make it an easy add-on to a mountain itinerary.

Things to do

• Hike to the Lower Waterfall — Follow the short well-trodden trail from the parking area to the forceful main cascade in about 15-20 minutes.
• Continue to the Upper Waterfall — A steeper, rockier scramble beyond the lower falls rewards you with a taller, less-crowded cascade.
• Photograph the Dariali Gorge — Capture the dramatic canyon walls and the Tergi (Terek) River on the drive and walk in from the Georgian Military Road.
• Cool off in the spray — Stand near the base of the powerful falls to feel the mist, especially refreshing during summer snowmelt.
• Visit Dariali Monastery — Stop at the modern Holy Trinity monastery complex near the Russian border just north of the waterfall turnoff.

• Guda cheese — A sharp, tangy sheep's-milk cheese aged in a skin sack, a specialty of the Khevi highlands around Kazbegi.
• Khachapuri — Warm cheese-filled bread makes an easy, filling meal at guesthouses and cafes in nearby Stepantsminda.

• Wear proper footwear — The rocky, sometimes wet and slippery trail to the upper falls demands sturdy shoes rather than sandals.
• Respect the border zone — You are very close to the Russian border, so carry your passport and heed any military or checkpoint signage.
• Bring cash for parking — A small fee is often collected at the trailhead and local vendors rarely accept cards this far up the valley.
• Check seasonal conditions — The falls are most powerful in late spring and summer snowmelt, while winter can make the road and trail icy.
