Truso Valley
თრუსოს ხეობა
A dramatic gorge along the Tergi River lined with mineral springs, travertine deposits and abandoned stone villages. Its otherworldly coloured pools and quiet ruins reward hikers seeking off-the-beaten-path landscapes.
Things to do
- Hike to Abano mineral springs — Follow the trail to the bubbling orange-red travertine pools where iron-rich mineral water seeps up and stains the rock in vivid colours.
- Explore Ketrisi village ruins — Wander the abandoned stone houses and defensive towers of this deserted settlement scattered along the valley floor.
- Visit Zakagori Fortress — Climb to the medieval fortress ruins perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the gorge near the Russian border zone.
- Walk the Tergi River gorge trail — Trek the mostly flat valley path starting from Kvemo Okrokana, taking in travertine terraces, springs and dramatic mountain walls.
- Photograph the coloured travertine pools — Seek out the surreal blue, orange and green mineral pools formed by carbonate deposits along the springs.
- See the abandoned village of Abano — Explore the crumbling houses beside the main springs, once inhabited before Soviet-era resettlement emptied the valley.
Food to try
- Khinkali — Juicy Georgian soup dumplings, a mountain staple best eaten in Kazbegi before or after your valley hike.
- Mtiuluri khachapuri — The highland cheese bread of the Mtiuleti region, hearty fuel for a long day of trekking.
- Guda cheese — A sharp, salty sheep's-milk cheese matured in animal skin, traditional to the shepherds of these mountains.
- Kubdari — A spiced meat-filled bread common in Georgia's mountain areas, ideal packed as trail food.
- Mineral spring water — The valley's naturally carbonated iron waters are drinkable at some springs, echoing famous Georgian mineral waters like Borjomi.
Local customs & good to know
- Carry your passport — Truso sits close to the disputed South Ossetia boundary, and border guards may check documents near Zakagori Fortress.
- Base yourself in Kazbegi — There is no lodging in the valley itself, so stay in Stepantsminda and arrange a day trip or 4x4 transfer to the trailhead.
- Respect the ruins and springs — Do not disturb the abandoned villages or bathe in the delicate travertine pools, which are fragile natural formations.
- Check weather and access — The unpaved road and river crossings can be impassable after rain, so a 4x4 or good hiking boots are essential.
