Local customs & good to know
- Greet with respect — Use 'Selamat pagi' (good morning) and show respect to elders and shopkeepers with a slight bow and right hand on chest, which opens doors and warrants friendlier service.
- Dress modestly near communities — While beach wear is fine at diving sites, wear cover-ups and longer clothes when visiting villages or markets to respect local Islamic and traditional customs.
- Bargain gently at markets — Haggling is expected at fish markets and souvenir stalls, but do so with good humor and respect; aggressive negotiation is considered rude.
- Learn dive-shop logistics early — Book diving excursions through reputable local operators the day before, as weather and boat schedules can change rapidly in the Flores Sea.
