Local customs & good to know
- Check Weather Conditions — Fiordland's weather changes rapidly; confirm conditions with DOC visitor centers in Glenorchy before starting the hike, as summit exposure makes it unsafe in high winds.
- Respect Māori Significance — The Fiordland region holds deep cultural importance to Ngāi Tahu iwi; acknowledge this heritage and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the landscape.
- Arrive Early for Parking — The Key Summit trailhead parking fills quickly during peak season; arrive by 8 AM to secure a spot, or use shuttle services from Glenorchy village.
- Department of Conservation Guidelines — Register your intentions with DOC if hiking solo, carry navigation tools, and follow track markers as weather and visibility can obscure the alpine route quickly.
