A spectacular canyon cutting into the Western Hajar with dramatic gorges, pools and the famous Snake Canyon. It is a favourite for hiking, canyoning and off-road drives toward Bald Sayt village.

• Shuwa — Marinated meat slow-cooked underground for hours, this celebratory dish appears at festivals and gatherings in nearby villages.
• Harees — A comforting porridge of wheat and slow-cooked meat, commonly eaten in the mountain communities of the Hajar.

Local customs & good to know

• Dress modestly at pools and villages — Even when swimming, wear shorts and a t-shirt rather than revealing swimwear out of respect for conservative local residents.
• Bring cash and supplies — There are no shops or ATMs in the wadi itself, so carry water, food and fuel before entering.
• Respect the falaj and farms — Do not wash or swim in irrigation channels feeding the village terraces, as this water is used for drinking and crops.
• Only attempt canyons with a guide — Flash floods can be deadly and the drive requires 4x4 skills, so hire a certified local guide and check weather forecasts first.
