Wadi Ghul

• Mishkak skewers — Grilled marinated meat skewers often found at roadside stalls in the villages below the mountain.

Local customs & good to know

• Carry cash and supplies — There are no shops or ATMs in the gorge area, so bring water, snacks and cash from Al Hamra or Nizwa beforehand.
• Dress modestly — Cover shoulders and knees out of respect for the conservative mountain communities you pass through.
• 4x4 recommended for the ascent — The steep road up to Jebel Shams and the Balcony Walk trailhead is best tackled with a high-clearance four-wheel drive.
• Ask before photographing locals — Rural villagers may prefer not to be photographed, so seek permission first as a courtesy.
