A dramatic cape where black volcanic rock formations meet white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It is a favourite spot for camping, fishing and photography, offering some of the most striking coastal scenery in central Oman.

Things to do

• Camp on the beach — Pitch a tent on the white sand between the black rock outcrops for a night under exceptionally clear desert skies.
• Photograph the volcanic cape — Capture the dramatic contrast of jagged black volcanic rock against turquoise water, especially striking at sunrise and sunset.
• Shore and rock fishing — Cast a line from the rocky headlands or beaches where local fishermen land kingfish, tuna and snapper.
• Explore tidal pools — Scramble over the black rocks at low tide to find crabs, small fish and marine life trapped in the pools.
• Swim in sheltered coves — Wade into the calm turquoise shallows between the rock formations away from stronger currents.
• Visit the fishing harbour — Watch the local fleet bring in their catch and see the small working port near the cape.
• Beachcombing and shell collecting — Walk the long stretches of sand to find shells, driftwood and interesting rock formations.
• Stargazing — Enjoy some of Oman's darkest skies far from any city light pollution.

• Grilled fresh fish — Kingfish or hamour caught locally, simply grilled over coals with lemon and salt.
• Omani shuwa — Marinated meat slow-cooked underground in spices, traditionally served on festive occasions.
• Majboos — Spiced rice cooked with fish or meat, saffron and dried lime, a staple coastal meal.
• Fresh lobster and crab — Seasonal shellfish sold cheaply by fishermen and often grilled or cooked in simple broths.
• Omani kahwa and dates — Cardamom-spiced coffee served with dates, the customary welcome anywhere in Oman.

Local customs & good to know

• Bring your own supplies — Ras Madrakah is remote with very few shops, so carry ample water, food and fuel from Duqm or Al Duqm before arriving.
• Dress modestly — Away from your campsite, cover shoulders and knees out of respect for the conservative local fishing community.
• Respect fishermen and leave no trace — Ask before photographing people, avoid disturbing nets and boats, and pack out all your rubbish.
• Prepare for no phone signal — Mobile coverage is patchy, so inform someone of your plans and carry a full tank and spare water.
