A UNESCO-listed ruined port city that was a major frankincense trading hub, set beside a lagoon in Salalah. Its excellent Museum of the Frankincense Land tells the story of Oman's maritime and incense trade.

• Shuwa — Marinated meat slow-cooked underground for hours, a festive Omani dish especially popular in Salalah.
• Fresh coconut and banana — Dhofar's fertile monsoon coast produces coconuts and bananas sold at roadside stalls near Salalah.
• Grilled Arabian Sea fish — Sample kingfish or hammour freshly caught along the Salalah coast and grilled with local spices.
• Luqaimat — Sweet fried dough balls drizzled with date syrup, a beloved Omani snack found in local eateries.

• Visit in the cool hours — Come early morning or late afternoon as the open site offers little shade and midday heat is intense outside khareef season.
• Respect the ruins — Stay on marked paths and do not climb or remove stones from the protected UNESCO archaeological site.
• Time your trip for khareef — The June to September monsoon transforms Dhofar into a green, misty landscape, a unique season to experience Salalah.
