History

Banat is a historical region in western Romania that was long part of the Habsburg Empire after the Ottomans were driven out in the early 18th century, when the Austrians organized and repopulated the area. The Habsburgs settled Germans, known as Danube Swabians, alongside Hungarians, Serbs, Romanians and others, giving the region its remarkable diversity. Timișoara, the regional capital, became one of the first European cities to introduce electric street lighting in 1884. After World War I, Banat was divided between Romania, Serbia and Hungary, and in 1989 Timișoara sparked the revolution that ended communist rule in Romania.
