Parcul Natural Apuseni

A vast karst wilderness of caves, gorges, ice caverns and forested plateaus straddling the western Carpathians. It is a haven for hiking, caving and exploring dramatic underground formations.

Things to do

• Scărișoara Ice Cave — Descend into one of Europe's largest underground glaciers, a massive block of ancient ice housed in a collapsed karst shaft.
• Bear Cave (Peștera Urșilor) — Tour the illuminated galleries famous for cave bear skeletons and dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations near Chișcău.
• Cetățile Ponorului — Hike to this spectacular collapsed doline and cave system, often called the 'citadels of the abyss', with its huge portals and sinking river.
• Groapa Ruginoasa — Marvel at a striking red-ochre erosion ravine that looks like a miniature canyon carved into the forested slopes.
• Galbena Gorges hike — Trek through the dramatic Galbena canyon with cascades, ladders and narrow limestone passages linking to Cetățile Ponorului.
• Vârtop Ski area and pass — Explore or ski the high plateau around Vârtop pass, a good base for winter and summer excursions.
• Padiș plateau — Base yourself on this central karst plateau for access to sinkholes, caves and marked trails across the wilderness.
• Meziad Cave — Visit one of Romania's earliest developed show caves, with wide chambers and abundant bat colonies.

• Balmoș — A rich shepherd's polenta cooked in sheep's milk or cream with fresh cheese, a mountain staple of the Apuseni highlands.
• Bulz ciobănesc — Baked polenta balls stuffed with sheep cheese, often topped with a fried egg or bacon.
• Țuică de prune — Strong homemade plum brandy offered as a welcome drink in nearly every mountain household.
• Brânză de burduf — Tangy sheep's cheese matured in bark or a skin pouch, sold at moți farmsteads and roadside stalls.
• Ciorbă de fasole cu ciolan — A hearty sour bean soup with smoked pork knuckle, warming after a day on the trails.
• Cârnați și slănină afumată — Home-smoked sausages and bacon cured in traditional wooden smokehouses of the Moți villages.

Local customs & good to know

• Land of the Moți — The Apuseni highlanders (moți) have a distinct centuries-old woodcraft and pastoral culture, historically famous for their wooden barrels and tubs.
• Come prepared for remoteness — Villages are scattered and services sparse, so carry cash, water, warm layers and a headlamp, as caves are cold year-round even in summer.
• Respect the karst and caves — Stay on marked trails, don't touch cave formations and follow guides, since the fragile ice and limestone systems are strictly protected.
• Buy directly from farmsteads — Purchasing cheese, honey and țuică from local households supports the community and gets you the freshest mountain products.
