Munții Măcin

Among the oldest mountains in Europe, these eroded granite ridges form a national park with steppe vegetation and rich birdlife. They offer excellent hiking and unusual landscapes unlike anywhere else in Romania.

Things to do

• Summit Țuțuiatu (Greci Peak) — Hike to the highest point of the range at 467 meters for panoramic views over the Danube floodplain and Dobrujan steppe.
• Explore Cozluk Trail — Follow the marked eco-tourism route through eroded granite outcrops and rare Balkan-Anatolian steppe flora.
• Birdwatching for raptors — Scan the ridges for eastern imperial eagles, long-legged buzzards, and pied wheatears that nest in this park.
• Visit Greci village base — Start most hikes from Greci, the main gateway village at the foot of the mountains near the old granite quarries.
• Cerna and Pricopan ridges — Trek the jagged Pricopan crest with its distinctive rocky pinnacles and spring wildflowers.
• Spring wildflower walks — Come in April and May to see peonies, irises, and endemic plants blanketing the steppe slopes.

• Ciorbă de perișoare — A sour meatball soup common in Dobrujan households, often served with hot peppers and bread.
• Plăcintă dobrogeană — A layered savory pie with brine cheese and dill reflecting the region's Turkish and Tatar heritage.
• Mielul de Dobrogea — Lamb raised on the salty steppe pastures, roasted or grilled and prized across the region.
• Saramură de pește — Danube fish grilled and served in a spicy brine sauce, a specialty of villages near the river.
• Baklava and Turkish sweets — Seek out honey-soaked pastries in local shops that carry on Dobruja's Ottoman-era food traditions.

• Bring water and sun protection — The steppe terrain offers little shade and gets very hot in summer, so carry plenty of water.

• Best visited in spring — April to June brings mild weather and blooming steppe, while midsummer can be scorching and dry.
