A fortified painted monastery whose exterior walls are covered with exceptionally well-preserved frescoes, including the celebrated Ladder of Virtue. Part of the UNESCO-listed painted churches of northern Moldavia.

• Attend an Orthodox service — Experience Byzantine chanting and candlelit worship inside the church, still an active convent home to a community of nuns.

Local customs & good to know

• Dress modestly to enter — Cover shoulders and knees, and women may be offered a headscarf as this is a working convent with nuns in residence.
• Photography rules — Exterior frescoes can be photographed freely, but interior photos are usually forbidden to protect the paintings and respect worship.
• Buy a ticket and hire a guide — An entrance fee applies and a knowledgeable guide greatly enriches understanding of the complex biblical scenes on the walls.
• Respect quiet and service times — Keep voices low and avoid disturbing prayers, as monastic life continues throughout your visit.
