Štrbské Pleso

A glacial mountain lake and popular Tatras resort with lakeside promenades, ski jumps and trailheads to high peaks. One of the most photographed spots in the High Tatras, beautiful in every season.

• Hike to Popradské Pleso — Follow the Magistrála trail through pine forest to another stunning glacial lake with a mountain chalet.
• Ascend to Skok Waterfall — Take the marked trail up the Mlynická dolina valley to the dramatic 25-metre Vodopád Skok.
• Ride the ski jumps and cable areas — Visit the FIS-standard ski jumping complex that hosted Nordic World Championships and offers viewing platforms.
• Ski or snowboard at Štrbské Pleso resort — Enjoy winter runs and cross-country tracks served by chairlifts right above the lake.
• Take the rack railway and Tatra Electric Railway — Ride the historic cog railway from Štrba or the electric trains linking Tatra resorts for scenic transfers.
• Trek toward Rysy or Solisko ridge — Use Štrbské Pleso as a trailhead for demanding high-peak ascents into the surrounding High Tatras.

• Bryndzové halušky — Slovakia's national dish of potato dumplings with sheep's bryndza cheese and bacon, served at mountain restaurants.
• Kapustnica — A hearty sauerkraut soup with sausage and mushrooms, perfect after a cold hike.
• Žinčica — A traditional warm sheep's-whey drink from the shepherd tradition of the Tatra region.
• Grilled trout (pstruh) — Freshwater trout is a regional specialty served pan-fried or grilled at lakeside eateries.
• Borovička — A juniper spirit popular in the mountains, often enjoyed as a warming after-ski shot.

Local customs & good to know

• Respect TANAP park rules — Štrbské Pleso lies in Tatra National Park, so stay on marked trails and never swim or camp by the lake.
• Check seasonal trail closures — High-mountain routes are officially closed roughly November to mid-June and can be dangerous without proper gear.
• Carry cash and layers — Mountain huts may prefer euros in cash, and weather changes fast even in summer so pack warm clothing.
• Start hikes early — Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so begin ridge and peak hikes at dawn for safety.
