History

The Trenčín Region takes its name from Trenčín, a town whose Roman inscription from 179 AD, carved into the castle rock, marks the northernmost known point of Roman military presence in the area and records the presence of the II legion at ancient Laugaricio. Throughout the Middle Ages, Trenčín Castle became one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Hungary, famously held by the powerful oligarch Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, who dominated much of Slovakia around 1300. In later centuries the region prospered through crafts, spa culture at Trenčianske Teplice, and industry, while towns like Bánovce, Prievidza, and Považská Bystrica grew as regional centres. It became an administrative region of independent Slovakia in 1996.
