My trip to United States
A 2-day trip through Mid-Atlantic, Your own places, planned by David Norminton.
You arrive in New York City on a summer's day in late July, the humidity rising from the streets as you make your way downtown toward Battery Park. Here, at the southern tip of Manhattan, you begin your journey into the layered history of this extraordinary place. The perimeter path draws you along the waterfront, where the past seems to whisper from every corner. You visit Castle Clinton National Monument, that restored 1811 coastal defense fort that has weathered centuries of change, and find yourself in the Native American heritage garden, a space that encourages quiet reflection and deeper understanding. From there, you move to the 9/11 Tribute Center, where the weight of memory settles over you as you contemplate the lives lost and the resilience that followed. On your final day, you're drawn back downtown to the World Trade Center, where Calatrava's Oculus building rises like a white architectural prayer against the sky. You walk through its soaring spaces, feeling the building's ethereal beauty, before descending into the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The two reflecting pools sit in the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood, their names inscribed around the edges—a powerful testament to remembrance and renewal. As you stand between these pools, surrounded by architecture both monumental and intimate, the significance of this place settles into you. Your time in New York becomes not just a visit, but a pilgrimage through memory.
