Barra de Valizas

A rustic bohemian fishing village with towering dunes and an unspoiled beach, popular with backpackers and artists. It's the starting point for the scenic dune walk toward Cabo Polonio.

• Climb the giant dunes — Scramble up the towering sand dunes just south of the village for sweeping views over the ocean and lagoon.
• Dune walk to Cabo Polonio — Trek roughly three hours south along the beach and dunes, crossing the Valizas stream by boat, to reach the off-grid village of Cabo Polonio.

• Relax on the unspoiled beach — Spend the day on the wide, empty Atlantic beach that is largely free of development and crowds.

• Kayak or paddle the lagoon — Explore the calm waters of the Arroyo Valizas and surrounding wetlands rich in birdlife.

• Empanadas de camarón — Shrimp-filled empanadas made from the day's catch are a popular quick bite.
• Tortas fritas — Fried dough cakes traditionally eaten on rainy days, sold by locals and at small stalls.
• Chivito uruguayo — The classic Uruguayan steak sandwich loaded with egg, ham, cheese and salad, found at casual eateries.
• Mate — Join locals sharing the traditional herbal infusion sipped from a gourd throughout the day.
• Fresh mussels and clams — Shellfish gathered along the coast appear in simple stews and grilled dishes.

• Come in summer for atmosphere — The village fills with artists, backpackers and live music mainly during January and February, and is very quiet off-season.
