A UNESCO World Heritage site and Bulgaria's most famous monastery, set dramatically in the forested Rila mountains. Its striped arcades, vivid frescoes and Hrelyo's Tower make it a spiritual and artistic masterpiece.

• Bob chorba — Traditional Bulgarian bean soup, a hearty warming dish ideal for the cool mountain climate.
• Rakia and homemade honey — Sample local fruit brandy and honey sold by vendors along the approach road.

Local customs & good to know

• Dress modestly — Cover shoulders and knees to enter the church, as this is an active Orthodox monastery.
• No photography inside the church — Photographing the frescoed interior is prohibited, though the courtyard is fine.
• Arrive early — Come before midday to avoid tour bus crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
• Respect quiet spaces — Monks still live here, so keep voices low and behave respectfully in the grounds.
