Stob Earth Pyramids
Стобски пирамиди
A cluster of dramatic red-and-yellow earth pyramids capped with stone, formed by centuries of erosion near the village of Stob. A short marked trail leads visitors among the towering natural sculptures with fine valley views.
Things to do
- Hike the pyramid trail — Follow the marked loop that climbs from the trailhead up among the towering red-and-yellow earth columns.
- Reach the viewpoint over the formations — Climb to the upper platform where the stone-capped pyramids fan out against the Rila foothills.
- See the 'Bride and Groom' pyramids — Spot the tall paired columns that locals nickname the wedding party for their human-like silhouettes.
- Explore Stob village church — Visit the village of Stob below the pyramids and its old Orthodox church before or after the walk.
- Photograph the valley of the Rilska River — Take in the panorama across the river valley toward Rila mountain from the trail's ridge sections.
- Day trip to Rila Monastery — Combine the pyramids with the nearby UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery a short drive up the valley.
Food to try
- Banitsa — Flaky filo pastry layered with white brine cheese and eggs, sold warm in nearby Kocherinovo and Blagoevgrad bakeries.
- Grilled trout — Fresh river trout from the Rila mountain streams, grilled and served in local mehanas.
- Tarator — A chilled cucumber, yogurt, garlic and walnut soup that is perfect after a hot hike.
- Kavarma — A slow-cooked clay-pot stew of pork or chicken with peppers and onions common in the region's taverns.
- Rila herbal tea and honey — Mountain herb teas and jars of local honey sold in villages around the Rilska valley.
Local customs & good to know
- Wear sturdy shoes — The clay trail becomes slippery and dangerous when wet, so avoid it right after rain and stay on the marked path.
- Small entrance fee — There is a modest ticket charge at the trailhead that helps maintain the paths and railings.
- Don't climb the pyramids — The formations are fragile and eroding, so stay behind barriers and never scramble up the soft columns.
- Bring water and sun protection — There is little shade among the exposed pyramids and no shops on the trail itself.
