Plan your trip to Samtskhe-Javakheti
Samtskhe-Javakheti is a mountainous region in southern Georgia famed for the medieval cave city of Vardzia, dramatic fortresses, and high volcanic lakes. Its history as a borderland between the Georgian and Anatolian worlds has left a rich mix of monasteries, castles, and Ottoman-era heritage. The spa town of Borjomi and the restored Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe are among its most popular draws.
Getting there & around
There is no major airport in the region; most travellers fly into Tbilisi (about 3–4 hours by road) and drive or take a marshrutka (minibus). Borjomi is reachable by train from Tbilisi, but exploring Vardzia, the fortresses, and the volcanic lakes is far easier with a rental car or hired driver. Roads to Akhaltsikhe and Borjomi are paved and good, though routes to remote lakes and monasteries can be rough.
How long to stay
Plan on 3–4 days to comfortably see Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe's Rabati Castle, and the Vardzia cave complex without rushing. Adding the Javakheti volcanic lakes or Borjomi-Kharagauli hiking can extend a visit to 5 days.
When to go
Visit between May and October, when mountain roads and cave sites are fully accessible. June to September offer warm, pleasant weather; May and October are cooler but quieter, while the high lakes and passes can be cold or snowbound in winter.

Frequently asked questions
Is Vardzia worth visiting?
Yes. Vardzia is one of Georgia's most impressive monuments, a sprawling 12th-century cave monastery city carved into a cliff face, with tunnels, chapels, and frescoes still visible.
How many days do you need in Samtskhe-Javakheti?
Three to four days is enough to see Borjomi, Rabati Castle, and Vardzia, while five days allows time for the volcanic lakes and hiking in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
How do you get from Tbilisi to Vardzia?
Vardzia is roughly a 4-hour drive from Tbilisi via Akhaltsikhe. There is no direct public transport, so most visitors drive, hire a driver, or take a marshrutka to Akhaltsikhe and connect from there.
Is Rabati Castle worth visiting?
Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe is heavily reconstructed but worth a visit for its blend of Georgian and Ottoman architecture, a mosque, museum, and panoramic views over the town.
What is the best time to visit Borjomi?
Late spring through early autumn (May to October) is best, with June to September offering the warmest weather for the park and mineral springs. Winter is cold but popular for nearby Bakuriani ski resort.
History
Samtskhe-Javakheti has long stood at a crossroads of empires, its fortress towns and monasteries guarding the routes between the Georgian heartland and the Anatolian world. In the medieval period it flourished under the Jaqeli princes of the Samtskhe-Saatabago, who patronized great sites such as the cave city of Vardzia, carved into the cliffs during the reign of Queen Tamar in the twelfth century. From the sixteenth century the region fell under prolonged Ottoman rule, which reshaped its religious and demographic character, before it was incorporated into the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. This last transition brought waves of Armenian settlers, especially to the Javakheti plateau, whose descendants remain a large part of the local population today.
Culture
The region is a highland mosaic where Georgian and Armenian communities live side by side, and this diversity is felt in its churches, cuisine and everyday life. The stark volcanic plateau of Javakheti, dotted with lakes and stone villages, gives way to the greener spa town of Borjomi, famed across the former Soviet space for its mineral water. Traditions here are shaped by a cold, upland climate, pastoral life and centuries of border-country resilience.
Language
Georgian is the official language, but Armenian is widely spoken across much of Javakheti, and Russian often serves as a common tongue between communities. A friendly "gamarjoba" (hello) in Georgian or "barev" in Armenian goes a long way with locals.
