Khertvisi Fortress

One of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in Georgia, standing dramatically at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers. Its towering stone walls guard the road to Vardzia and date back to antiquity.

• Explore the fortress walls — Wander the well-preserved stone ramparts and towers that climb the rocky ridge above the river confluence.
• Climb to the citadel keep — Ascend to the upper castle for commanding views over the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers meeting below.
• Photograph the river confluence — Capture the dramatic spot where the Paravani flows into the Mtkvari beneath the fortress cliffs.
• Visit the fortress church — See the small stone church within the walls, part of the medieval complex reconstructed over centuries.
• Continue to Vardzia cave city — Use Khertvisi as a gateway on the road to the famous rock-hewn monastery of Vardzia further up the valley.
