Dramatic seaside cliffs of up to several meters rising above a wild, empty Baltic beach lined with pines. It is one of Kurzeme's most scenic and atmospheric stretches of coast, especially at sunset.
Things to do
- Sunset at the bluffs — Time your visit for evening when the sun sinks straight into the Baltic Sea, lighting up the sandy cliffs in warm gold.
- Descend to the wild beach — Take one of the steep footpaths down the crumbling bluffs to walk the empty pine-backed shoreline.
- Visit Jūrkalne Catholic Church — See the whitewashed Sāta Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph, a rare Catholic outpost in this stretch of Kurzeme.
- Cliff-top clifftop walk — Follow the trail along the edge of the bluffs among windblown pines for sweeping sea views.
- Photograph the exposed roots and eroding cliffs — Capture the dramatic tree roots hanging over the constantly retreating sand cliffs, a striking sign of coastal erosion.
- Beachcombing for Baltic amber — Search the tideline after storms, when pieces of amber sometimes wash up along this coast.
- Stargazing and quiet camping — With almost no light pollution, the dark coast is excellent for watching stars over the sea from the pine forest edge.
Food to try
- Smoked Baltic fish — Look for locally smoked flounder, herring or eel sold by fishermen and small smokehouses along the Kurzeme coast.
- Sklandrausis — Try this traditional Suiti and Kurzeme rye-crust tart filled with carrot and potato paste, a protected regional specialty.
- Rupjmaize (dark rye bread) — Dense sour Latvian rye bread is a staple to pair with fish or cheese picnics on the beach.
- Suiti-style hearty stews — The nearby Suiti community serves rustic meat and vegetable dishes rooted in local farmhouse cooking.
- Foraged berries and mushrooms — In late summer and autumn the pine forests yield bilberries, lingonberries and chanterelles.
Local customs & good to know
- Bring everything you need — Jūrkalne is remote with few shops or cafés, so pack water, food and fuel before arriving.
- Stay back from the cliff edge — The sandy bluffs are actively eroding and can collapse, so keep a safe distance from the crumbling edge.
- Respect the Suiti heritage — You are in the land of the Catholic Suiti minority, whose singing traditions are on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
- Note the former border zone history — This coast was a closed Soviet border area until 1991, which is why it remains so wild and undeveloped today.
