Nemuno delta

A vast wetland regional park where the Nemunas River meets the Curonian Lagoon, teeming with migratory birds and flooded villages. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, anglers and boat excursions.

• Birdwatching at Ventės Ragas — Visit the ornithological station at Ventė Cape, one of Europe's oldest bird-ringing stations, to observe massive spring and autumn migrations.
• Climb Ventės Ragas Lighthouse — Ascend the historic lighthouse at the tip of the cape for sweeping views over the Curonian Lagoon and delta wetlands.
• Boat excursion through flooded villages — Take a boat trip around Rusnė and the delta channels, especially during spring floods when villages are partly submerged.

• Cycle the delta polder dykes — Ride along the flat embankments and dykes among meadows, reeds and grazing horses of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park.
• Winter smelt fishing and ice excursions — Join locals ice-fishing for smelt (stinta) on the frozen lagoon in winter.

• Smoked eel — The delta's signature delicacy, freshly caught eel slowly smoked and sold from lakeside stalls and homes.
• Fried smelt (stinta) — Small cucumber-scented lagoon fish fried whole and eaten by hand, a seasonal winter and early spring treat.
• Fresh perch and pike dishes — Locally caught lagoon fish served pan-fried or in soup at village guesthouses and fishermen's homesteads.
• Žuvienė (fish soup) — A hearty Lithuanian fish soup made with the day's delta catch, potatoes and dill.
• Kastinys with rye bread — A whipped soured-cream and butter spread from the region, eaten with dark rye and boiled potatoes.

Local customs & good to know

• Time your visit for the floods and migrations — Spring brings dramatic floods and huge flocks of migrating birds, the most spectacular time to experience the delta.
• Respect the regional park rules — Nemunas Delta is a protected regional park and Ramsar wetland, so stay on marked trails and avoid disturbing nesting birds.
• Bring cash and book fish direct from fishermen — Smoked eel and fresh catch are best bought straight from local families, who often prefer cash.
• Prepare for water access — Rusnė can be cut off by floods, so check road conditions and consider a local boat guide for the channels.
