Nida

A charming resort village on the Curonian Spit known for its colourful fishermen's cottages, the Parnidis Dune and the Thomas Mann house-museum. It is the cultural heart of the spit and a favourite escape for artists and holidaymakers.

• Kastinys — Try this thick, tangy whipped sour-cream and butter spread traditionally served warm with boiled potatoes.
• Cepelinai — Sample the national potato dumplings stuffed with meat and topped with bacon and sour cream at local restaurants.
• Šaltibarščiai — Cool off with the bright pink cold beetroot soup made with kefir and served with hot potatoes in summer.
• Fresh lagoon fish dishes — Order grilled or fried pike-perch and perch caught in the Curonian Lagoon at waterfront eateries.

Local customs & good to know

• Buy your spit entry permit — Vehicles entering the Curonian Spit National Park must pay an ecological fee, so keep proof of payment or arrive by bus or ferry.
• Respect the fragile dunes — Stay on marked paths on the Parnidis Dune, as walking on protected sand is prohibited to prevent erosion.
• Cash and cards both handy — Most restaurants take cards, but small smokehouse stalls and markets may prefer euros in cash.
• Book ahead in summer — Nida fills with holidaymakers in July and August, so reserve accommodation and ferry crossings well in advance.
