Plan your trip to Marijampolė & Suvalkija
Marijampolė & Suvalkija is a fertile, gently rolling agricultural region in southwestern Lithuania, known for its rich farmland, traditional Suvalkijan culture and proximity to the Polish and Kaliningrad borders. It's an off-the-beaten-path destination centred on the town of Marijampolė, ideal for travellers wanting quiet countryside, local markets and cross-border road trips rather than major tourist sights.
Getting there & around
The nearest major airport is Kaunas (about 60 km northeast) or Vilnius (roughly 150 km); both connect to Marijampolė via the A5 highway. Driving is the most practical way to explore the region and its scattered villages, though buses link Marijampolė with Kaunas, Vilnius and Polish towns. The Via Baltica (A5/E67) runs straight through, making it an easy stop on road trips between Kaunas and the Polish border.
How long to stay
One to two days is usually enough to see Marijampolė and drive through the surrounding Suvalkija farmland and border villages. Add an extra day if you want to combine it with a cross-border trip to Poland or explore nearby lakes and small towns.
When to go
Summer (June to August) is best, when the fertile farmland is green, days are long and rural villages are at their liveliest. Late spring and early autumn are pleasant and quieter, while winters are cold, grey and offer little for visitors.

History
Marijampolė and the surrounding Suvalkija region lie in southwestern Lithuania, historically part of the ethnographic land known as Sūduva or Suvalkija. In the 19th century the area belonged to the Congress Kingdom of Poland under Russian rule, and it was here that serfdom was abolished earlier than elsewhere in Lithuania, giving rise to a class of prosperous, independent-minded farmers. The town of Marijampolė grew around a monastery and became an important center of the Lithuanian national revival, nurturing writers and intellectuals such as those linked to the banned-book smugglers of the late 1800s. During the Soviet era it was briefly renamed Kapsukas before reclaiming its historic name after independence.
Culture
Suvalkija is often described as the land of hardworking, thrifty and orderly farmers, and its people, sometimes affectionately teased as kapsai and zanavykai, take pride in their neat homesteads and strong sense of self-reliance. The region is famous for its rich rural traditions, colorful national costumes and hearty cuisine, and it contributed many figures to Lithuania's literary and cultural life. Local festivals, folk crafts and a deep attachment to the land remain central to the area's identity.
Language
Locals speak Lithuanian, and the Suvalkija dialect is regarded as one of the closest to standard literary Lithuanian, which is why it strongly influenced the modern written language. A friendly "Laba diena" (good day) and "Ačiū" (thank you) will always be warmly received.
Best time to visit
