• Respect the earthworks — The hillforts are protected archaeological monuments, so keep to worn paths and avoid digging or driving stakes into the mounds.
• Mind the border zone — You are directly opposite Kaliningrad Oblast, so carry ID and do not attempt to cross or photograph border installations.
• The Sudargas legend — Locals tell that the mounds are named for an ancient warrior-duke, a story worth asking about in the village.
• Come prepared for open ground — There are few facilities and little shade, so bring water, sturdy shoes and a wind layer as the plateaus are exposed.
