Wadi Bani Khalid
وادي بني خالد
One of Oman's most famous wadis, with year-round emerald pools framed by palms and rugged canyon walls. It is a popular spot for swimming, hiking and exploring the Muqal Cave.
Things to do
- Swim in the emerald pools — Cool off in the year-round natural pools with their clear turquoise water near the main entrance.
- Explore Muqal Cave — Scramble up the wadi and squeeze into the dark, narrow Muqal Cave that requires a torch and some clambering.
- Hike the canyon trail — Follow the concrete path and rocky route upstream past palm groves and towering canyon walls.
- Cliff jumping into deep pools — Adventurous visitors leap from the rocks into the deeper natural pools further up the wadi.
- Picnic in the shaded gazebos — Relax at the covered seating areas beside the water near the car park with families and local visitors.
- Photograph the falaj and palm oasis — Capture the contrast of green date palms, still pools and dramatic rocky ridges throughout the wadi.
- Spot small fish and toads — Watch the tiny garra fish nibble at your feet in the shallows of the pools.
Food to try
- Omani shuwa — Marinated meat slow-cooked underground for hours in banana leaves, often eaten on special occasions in the region.
- Grilled fish and rice — Simple restaurants near Al Hajir and Bidiyah serve fresh grilled fish with spiced rice.
- Omani kahwa and dates — Cardamom-scented coffee served with local dates is the traditional welcome across Ash Sharqiyah.
- Mishkak skewers — Grilled meat skewers sold at roadside stalls on the way to the wadi make a quick, tasty snack.
- Harees — A comforting porridge of wheat and meat pounded to a smooth texture, common in Omani homes.
Local customs & good to know
- Dress modestly when swimming — Wear shorts and a t-shirt rather than a bikini out of respect for local families sharing the pools.
- Take all litter with you — Bins are limited, so carry out your rubbish to help keep the fragile wadi ecosystem clean.
- Bring cash and water — There are few facilities beyond the entrance, so pack drinking water, snacks and small change for any parking or refreshments.
- Visit early or on weekdays — Fridays and holidays get very crowded, so arrive early in the morning for a quieter, cooler experience.
