Wadi Shab
وادي شاب
A spectacular gorge reached by boat and a scenic hike, ending in turquoise pools and a hidden waterfall inside a cave. It is one of Oman's most rewarding day hikes and swims.
Things to do
- Boat crossing to the trailhead — Take the short local boat ride across the entrance pool to reach the start of the gorge trail.
- Hike through the palm-lined gorge — Follow the well-worn path past falaj channels, banana and date plantations, and terraced farms toward the pools.
- Swim the turquoise pools — Wade and swim through a series of emerald-green pools carved between towering limestone cliffs.
- Squeeze into the hidden waterfall cave — Swim through a narrow rock gap to reach the concealed cavern with its dramatic internal waterfall.
- Cliff jumping into the pools — Leap from the rock ledges into deep clear water where locals and adventurous visitors take the plunge.
- Explore Bimmah Sinkhole nearby — Combine your visit with a stop at the striking Hawiyat Najm sinkhole a short drive up the coast.
- Photograph the gorge from the ridge — Pause on the higher path sections for sweeping views over the wadi and its layered rock walls.
Food to try
- Omani shuwa — Marinated lamb or goat slow-cooked underground in banana leaves, often served on festive occasions.
- Fresh dates and khanjar dates — Buy locally grown dates from the palm plantations that line the wadi, a staple of Omani hospitality.
- Mishkak skewers — Grilled marinated meat skewers sold at roadside stalls near Tiwi and along the coastal road.
- Omani kahwa with halwa — Cardamom-scented coffee served alongside sticky rosewater-and-saffron halwa, a classic welcome treat.
- Grilled fresh fish — Sample the day's catch at simple eateries in the nearby fishing village of Tiwi.
Local customs & good to know
- Dress modestly for swimming — Wear a T-shirt and shorts rather than a bikini, as this is a rural and conservative area frequented by families.
- Start early and carry water — Begin the hike in the morning to avoid midday heat, and bring water and sturdy shoes plus a dry bag for valuables.
- Respect the farms and falaj — Stay on the path through the plantations and do not disturb the irrigation channels that villagers depend on.
- Leave no trace — Carry out all litter, as Wadi Shab has no bins and its pools are a shared natural and community resource.
