The Kaaba

The cube-shaped building at the center of Masjid al-Haram draped in black silk, which Muslims face during prayer and circumambulate during pilgrimage. It is the spiritual center of Islam and the focal point of the Hajj pilgrimage, believed to be the holiest place on Earth by Muslims.

Things to do

• Tawaf (Circumambulation) — Walk counterclockwise around the Kaaba seven times, a central ritual of both Umrah and Hajj pilgrimage.
• Sa'y Between Safa and Marwa — Travel back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times, commemorating Hagar's search for water.
• Pray at Maqam Ibrahim — Offer two units of prayer at the Station of Abraham, located near the Kaaba where Abraham traditionally stood.
• Visit the Black Stone — Attempt to touch or kiss the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad) embedded in the southeastern corner of the Kaaba if accessibility permits.
• Drink from the Well of Zamzam — Drink water from the sacred Zamzam well, believed to have been revealed to Hagar and her son Ishmael.
• Observe from Upper Levels — Ascend to the upper galleries and mezzanines of Masjid al-Haram for panoramic views of the Kaaba and the worshipping crowds.

• Zamzam Water — The sacred mineral water from the Zamzam well is consumed by pilgrims for its spiritual and purported healing properties.
• Dates and Date Paste — Fresh and dried dates from Saudi Arabia are widely consumed by pilgrims, particularly for breaking fast during Ramadan.
• Kabsa — A traditional Saudi rice dish layered with fragrant spices, meat, and vegetables, commonly served in restaurants near the Haram.
• Shawarma — Roasted meat wraps seasoned with Middle Eastern spices, readily available from vendors in the surrounding streets of Masjid al-Haram.
• Falafel and Hummus — Deep-fried chickpea patties and chickpea paste are popular vegetarian options at food stalls around the Holy Mosque.

Local customs & good to know

• Modest Dress Requirements — Both men and women must dress modestly; women must wear the Ihram (two white sheets for pilgrims) or an abaya, and men must cover from navel to knee.
• Ritual Purity (Wudu) — Perform ablution before entering the mosque and circumambulating the Kaaba, as ritual cleanliness is mandatory in Islamic worship.
• Clockwise Flow During Tawaf — Keep the Kaaba on your left and move counterclockwise with the flow of other pilgrims; do not swim against the current to avoid disrupting the ritual.
• Photography and Recording Restrictions — Photography policies vary; always observe signage and respect the privacy of worshippers, especially during prayer times.
