Western Norway
Vestlandet
History
Western Norway has been shaped by its dramatic fjords and maritime heritage for thousands of years, with settlements thriving along the coast since prehistoric times. During the Viking Age, this region was a center of Norse power and exploration, with many expeditions departing from these shores. The Middle Ages saw the rise of the Hanseatic League's influence in Bergen, which became one of Northern Europe's most important trading posts. In more recent centuries, fishing, shipbuilding, and trade have remained the lifeblood of Vestlandet's economy and culture.
Culture
Vestlandet is known for its fierce independence, strong local pride, and a deep connection to the sea that defines daily life and traditions. The region celebrates its seafaring past through festivals, traditional boat-building, and a cuisine heavily centered on fish and shellfish. Art and music flourish here, with Bergen serving as a cultural hub, and traditional Norwegian folk traditions remain vibrant in smaller communities throughout the region.
Language
The local dialect, Nynorsk (one of Norway's two official written standards), is widely used in Western Norway and reflects the region's distinct linguistic identity. Visitors will encounter phrases like 'Hallo' for hello and 'Takk' for thank you, while locals often use 'Korleis går det?' to ask how things are going.
Best time to visit
