Plan your trip to Turkey

Turkey spans Europe and Asia, offering ancient ruins, turquoise coastlines, vibrant bazaars, and dramatic landscapes in eight distinct regions. From the marble temples of the Aegean to the otherworldly rock formations of Cappadocia, it's a country where history, culture, and natural beauty intersect at nearly every turn.

Getting there & around

Most visitors fly into Istanbul (Atatürk or Sabiha Gökçen airports), though Izmir and Antalya also receive international flights. Domestic travel is easy via domestic flights, long-distance buses, or trains; a rental car works best for exploring coastal regions and Cappadocia, while public transport suffices for major cities.

How long to stay

Plan 10–14 days to experience multiple regions meaningfully; 7 days covers Istanbul and one coastal region, but you'll miss the depth Turkey offers. Two weeks allows you to hit the Aegean, Cappadocia, and Mediterranean without feeling rushed.

When to go

April–May and September–October offer ideal temperatures and fewer crowds; July–August is hot and busy on coasts. Winter (November–March) is quiet but rainy in western regions, though Central Anatolia and the southeast remain largely dry.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Istanbul (Marmara) — Arrive and explore the old city: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. Wander the Grand Bazaar and watch the sunset from the Galata Tower.
  2. Istanbul to Izmir (Aegean) — Fly or take an overnight bus to Izmir on the Aegean coast. Spend the afternoon at the seafront promenade and visit the Konak neighbourhood's museums.
  3. Aegean coast: Ephesus and Pamukkale — Day trip south to the ruins of Ephesus, one of the world's best-preserved ancient cities. Continue to Pamukkale's white limestone terraces and thermal pools (Hierapolis ruins above).
  4. Pamukkale to Cappadocia — Travel to Cappadocia's fairy-chimney landscape; settle in Göreme village. Explore cave churches and underground cities like Derinkuyu in the afternoon.
  5. Cappadocia (Central Anatolia) — Pre-dawn hot-air balloon ride over the surreal rock formations. Return for breakfast and explore open-air museums and pottery studios in Avanos.
  6. Cappadocia to Antalya (Mediterranean) — Fly south to Antalya; explore the old walled harbour (Kaleiçi) and nearby Düden Waterfalls. Relax on Mediterranean beaches.
  7. Mediterranean: Türkoise coast — Day trip to the turquoise bays and Lycian ruins of the southwestern coast (Ölüdeniz or Demre). Return to Antalya or stay overnight for a boat tour.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to visit Turkey?

Most visitors (EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) receive a 90-day visa-free stay or can obtain an e-Visa online quickly and cheaply. Check your passport validity (at least 6 months recommended) and your nationality's specific requirements before travelling.

Is Turkey safe for tourists right now?

Turkey is generally safe for tourists in major cities and tourist areas; millions visit annually without incident. Avoid large gatherings and border regions, use registered taxis, and stay aware of local conditions in remote areas.

How much does a trip to Turkey cost?

Budget travellers can spend $30–50/day on hostels, street food, and public transport; mid-range visitors $80–150/day with mid-range hotels and restaurants. Istanbul and resort areas are pricier; rural regions and inland towns offer better value.

Is English spoken in Turkey?

English is widely spoken in Istanbul, tourist areas, and by younger generations, but less so in rural villages and the southeast. Learning a few basic Turkish phrases is helpful and appreciated; translation apps are useful for navigating menus and signs.

What currency does Turkey use and can you use cards?

Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (TRY); ATMs are abundant in cities and towns for cash withdrawals. Credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas, but small vendors and rural establishments may only take cash.
